Ideally a stopover destination for travellers going towards Haridwar, Rishikesh or Mussoorie, Dehradun is the capital city of Uttarakhand, nestled between Himalayan foothills and Sivalik ranges. It is a normal bustling city full of exciting stories about its history and heritage. Its lush green cover and the fact that it has so many important landmarks like: Indian Military Academy, the Wildlife Institute of India, Survey of India and prestigious Doon Schools that dot this valley. Here are a few interesting facts about this hill-station.
1: This town has been an inspiration for many eminent personalities (both Indian and international) like Ruskin Bond, Bil Acne, David Cling, Nayantra Sahgal among others who have made town their home and chose to stay here till the end of their lives.
2: Dehradun finds reference in the epic Hindu texts of Ramayana and Mahabharata. According to the legend, Lord Ram and Lakshman had visited the region on their way back from Lanka. Also, this region was a home to the great teacher of Pandavas and Kauravas — Guru Dronacharya.
3: The prestigious Doon schools, known all over the world , actually came into being in 1935. Some even call this league of schools Elton of The East.
4: The Sahastradhara spring in Dehradun is known for its sulphuric healing properties for any kind of skin diseases.
5: In the year 2000, the new state of Uttarakhand was created out of Uttar Pradesh andDehradun was made its capital. Uttarakhand is 27th state of Republic of India.
